Back to the Future Season 1 Episode 4

Episode IV: Double Vision

This Episode begins with Marty trapped in some sort of dystopian detention center. We need to bust out of this cell, rescue Citizen Brown, escape, and figure out how to restore the timeline. But for starters, let's get Marty's stuff out of that locker. Use the intercom once to overhear a conversation, then use it a second time to speak to the guard. Ask why your stuff is locked up, then ask to take a look at it. Interact with the camera to talk to George. Tell him how you tried to peek past the guard and George helps Marty get his stuff back. Peek through the window above the bed to see Jennifer in the next cell. Use the camera again to ask your father if there's a way to talk to Jennifer. He patches you through and you discover she's been Citizen Plussed! Use Marty's guitar on the squawk box to snap Jen back to her usual self. After she frees Marty, use the door on your cell to leave it. After the cutscene you'll pop:

Walk to the right and continue until you see a guard at a control panel. Interact with the food tray, then head left to a heavily bolted door with an intercom next to it. Grab the 1986 newspaper from your inventory and use it with the crack under the door. Interact with the intercom to see Tannen, then tell him to eat his pill. Retrieve the newspaper from under the door, then use the pill with the guard's soda. Use the control panel to see five switches. Use the olfactory (far-right) switch to clog the aroma tanks and get Edna and the guard out of their office. Turn up the volume (center-left), then exit the control panel. Walk to the left and use the door to enter the office Edna was in. Use Marty's guitar with the microphone to free Citizen Brown and bust out!

Choose whatever options you like as you'll pick all of them eventually. Try to get out of the recycling bin and Edna appears. Talk with her while you wait for Citizen Brown to return with the DeLorean so you can head back to 1931. After the cutscene Marty and Doc are in front of the old Town theater again. Say whatever you like and eventually Marty and Doc nearly run into 1931 Emmett. Once you have full control of Marty again head over to the barbershop and talk to Emmett. No matter what you say, you find out that Edna has really got her hooks into him. More importantly, you discover that you didn't go back to the right date! Emmett and Edna have been together for months and he's showing a "Mental Alignment Meter" at the Expo! Run back to the courthouse doors to inform Doc of the error in the time circuits and to head over to the Expo.

Note : There is a missable achievement for taking the minimum number of trips between here (out in front of the high school) and Emmett's lab. You can only take one manual trip (a second is made as a part of regular story progression) without violating the conditions of the achievement. Make sure you do everything before leaving and make sure you don't interact with the street at the bottom of the screen by accident ...like I did once.

Go over to the left side of the entrance and talk to Edna, who is in the midst of harassing Marty's grandfather. Say whatever you like to Edna (it's hard to get a word in anyhow) until she goes back to nagging Artie. Talk to her again to find out what Edna sees in Emmett. These three qualities (looking good in a suit, faithfulness, and good citizenship) represent our three main goals for most of this episode. At this point you can back out of the conversation to see Trixie exit the high school. Report back to Doc and ask about the DeLorean. Doc takes the DeLorean on a test run and discovers the problem is getting worse!

Note that one of the exhibit tents on the front lawn is now open. We need a couple things from it so walk to the right and approach the left side of the right tent. Interact with the train of the future and Edna comes over. Doc is thankfully there to run interference for you. After the cutscene, note the five buttons at the bottom of the future Hill Valley exhibit. Press the center-right button to trigger a rainbow, then press the center button to use the sprinkler to knock the diamond-shaped prism loose. Retrieve it from the left side of the exhibit because you'll need it later.

Go to the left and speak to Trixie. Ask for her help in making Edna jealous and she refuses. In case you didn't get the hint, Trixie will only agree if she's mad at Edna and if she lost her job. Speak to Edna and tell her you talked to Trixie. Edna is outraged (imagine that) so ask her why she wants Trixie fired, then back out of the conversation. Off in the distance (opposite side of the entrance) you should see Cueball leaning up against a truck. Ask him if he's playing for Trixie tonight, then ask if he's angry about Trixie. Inquire about her "toe curling past" and after sharing an embarrassing secret, Cueball gives you a postcard featuring a scantily-clad photo of Trixie. Ask Cueball what's up with his teeth ("seriously") until he reveals he's been binging on ...algae cakes? After he hands them over, back out of the conversation.

There's an achievement for offering these cakes to everyone, so select them from your inventory and use them on: Cueball, "Guy", Artie, Trixie, Edna, and Doc. You need need to offer one to Emmett so don't expect it to pop yet. You can get an achievement by going into your inventory and using cn_X to examine the postcard, which should pop:

Make sure you examine the postcard before giving it to Edna. You won't get it back and you'll have to restart the episode. Once you do, Edna uses the postcard of Trixie's (gasp!) Canadian heritage to get her fired. With that unfortunate deed done, Trixie is ready to mess with Edna. We've also done everything we can do here for now, so use the train skateboard with the street to head over to Emmett's lab. It's a bit of a cluttered mess, so you may want to use object highlighting in order to select the object you want. First off, let's offer Emmett an algae cake and finish off another achievement.

Walk all the way around the ping pong table and interact with the stack of "mind maps" to the left of the odd-looking printer to learn what Emmett is working on. Interact with the stack twice more to unlock a dialogue-based missable achievement.

Interact with the tall machine to the left to see the Mental Alignment Meter in action. Since Emmett is wearing the helmet, we can fudge some results and make Edna think Emmett is a degenerate criminal. Use the mind map test switch (on the ping pong table) to start the test and a picture of Edna is shown on the wall. Only a degenerate wouldn't like Edna, so we need to get a negative reaction out of Emmett.

In the left-foreground there's a tank with a red valve on it. Using this emits a horrible smell and should turn the light on Emmett's helmet red. This constitutes a negative reaction, so hit the slide advancer. The next photo is John Wilkes Boothe - assassin of Abraham Lincoln. Now we need a positive reaction. Use the stew pot on the right side of the foreground to turn on the yellow light (indicating a neutral response) and then use the pot again to get a positive response. With the green light on, hit the slide advancer again.

Next up is Officer Parker. Use the value twice (Emmett's red light should be on) and use the slide advancer. The bearded fellow is a Tannen, so we need a positive response. Use the pot twice - turning the green light on- then use the slide advancer. An innocent child this time. Two uses of the valve, then hit the advancer to bring up a picture of Trixie. You know the drill: use the pot twice and hit the slide advancer one last time to complete the test. Use your newly-acquired mind map with the mental alignment meter to confirm the results, then use the mind map with Emmett's mind map (on the wall) to switch the two.

Over by the tank/valve you'll see a can of oil. This looks like it could ruin a suit so grab it and use it on Emmett. Unfortunately Emmett has a special cleaning compound that cleans his suit up perfectly. However, you learn that after 12 hours the compound degrades into a different chemical that eats away fabric. Examine the cleaning shower (by the exit) and Emmett shows you a small bottle of the cleaning solution. Grab the cleanser spray bottle from the top of the bookshelf. We're almost done here, so head over by the stew pot again.

Examine the easel and say you don't like the picture. Grab the photo album from the ping pong table. With all that done, we just need one last missable achievement. Make for the exit and Emmett's murmuring stops Marty. Turns out he's going to propose to Edna tonight! Once you regain control of Marty do not leave, but talk to Emmett instead. Scroll down and say "You can't marry Edna!" When he asks why, tell him that he's supposed to marry someone else.

Exit the conversation and use the exit to return to the high school. We need to age Emmett's cleaner 12 hours in order for it to destroy his suit. But first, head right and notice the open tent. Use the spray bottle on the caveman and then interact with him to take the fur. Go back left and use the spray bottle with the time machine. Interact with the DeLorean to see if it's ready for a test run. If not, talk to someone and kill some time. Tell Doc the light is green and he'll take it for a 1-second trip. When he returns you'll find out the cleaner has been aged 9 1/2 hours. This isn't long enough, but the DeLorean isn't ready for another test.

Talk to Trixie about breaking Emmett and Edna up and Trixie has a plan. She needs a diamond, a photo album, and a fur. As long as you followed this walkthrough you have all three of those, so use each item on Trixie and she'll be ready when you are.

Examine the DeLorean again and the light should be green. Tell Doc and after he returns, the solution will be old enough.

The cutscene takes Marty back to Emmett's lab. Tell Edna Carl Sagan wants to talk to her about the speakeasy arsonist to get her out of here. If you missed the "An Uncomfortable Truth" achievement, you have another opportunity to talk to Emmett and get it. When you're ready, give Emmett the spray bottle and you'll return to the Expo grounds. As long as you only visited Emmett's lab once before, you should pop another achievement once you regain control of Marty.

Talk with Doc to learn he's getting cold feet. When Doc asks how Edna ends up, he won't be satisfied with any answer but the truth - that she's alone and miserable. Hearing this leads Doc to have a change of heart and regardless of what you say, he leaves with the DeLorean. Provided you followed all the other steps, Emmett should arrive. If you missed the Let Them Eat, Um, Cake achievement, this is your last chance to offer a cake (to anyone except Doc of course) and pop it now. When ready, use the can of oil on Emmett again. Emmett inadvertently destroys his suit, Trixie plays her part perfectly, and when Emmett tries to exonerate himself with his invention, your sabotage foils him. Wow. I hope you're proud of yourself.

Marty chases Emmett to the courthouse. Say whatever you like and try to get Emmett to see Frankenstein. Remind Emmett that he cares about inventing, but no matter what invention you name it won't convince him, so just say "um". Next, say Emmett cares about Marty before admitting that whatever alias you've been using isn't your real name. You won't be able to convince Emmett that what you did was for the greater good, so tell him you did it "for the hell of it" to really fire him up. To really rub it in, tell Emmett he's "delusional" - which finally inspires him to redouble his scientific efforts.

We need to extricate Emmett from his predicament and get to the Expo, so ask him if he has anything useful. He drops the cleaner, but you can retrieve it by going through the hatch next to the clock. Pick up the spray bottle, then use it on the rope holding the statue. Go back into the courthouse to return to the ledge, so you can use the hanging rope on the left. Swing back and forth, then interact with Emmett once you're close to him. Finally, use the spray bottle on Emmett to get him un-stuck. The final achievement of this Episode should pop as the final cutscene plays.

You should have 47/59 achievements for 800g.
